The History of AutismBC:
For over 50 years, AutismBC has been a vital lifeline for the autism community in British Columbia. We have championed advocacy, built and shared invaluable, evidence-based resources, and created connections for children, adults and caregivers throughout the province.
Born in 1975 by a woman who gave birth to an autistic son, Nina Pickburn was alone, isolated, without resources or supports and felt adrift. Nina felt that if she was feeling this way, others must be as well.
Nina and a handful of other women create the Autism Society of British Columbia (later changed to AutismBC in 1990).
From those first steps, AutismBC has evolved into a province-wide organization that today supports 13000 and counting and is recognized nationally and internationally for its work to support autistic children, youth, adults, seniors, and caregivers.
AutismBC’ s approach mirrors Nina’s as we are always rooted in empathy and resilience, and always from an autistic perspective. 50% of our Board of Directors identifies as autistic and 92% of our team are neurodivergent and/or caregivers of autistic people.
AutismBC’ s accessible and inclusive programs are designed to foster connections, support and learning. They include Ask AutismBC; Autism Parent Support Group; Autism Goes for children, AutismBC Talks. AutismBC Connects for children and Youth; Autism Meets for all ages; What is Autism; Waiting for Assessments: and Together on the Spectrum offers holistic, wrap-around support to children and families at every stage in life
